A Big Problem For Pets.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, over two-thirds of americans are overweight and over one-third are clinically obese.  About 15% of U.S. Schoolchildren are obese and 30% are overweight.  The U.S. was ranked as the 9th fattest country out of 194 in a study conducted by the World Health Organization in 2007.  According to a 2007 study conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, approximately  43% of dogs and 53% of cats were classified by their veterinarians as overweight or obese.  It is estimated that pet obesity costs owners over $20 million per year.  Overweight pets, even by just a few pounds, are significantly more likely to develop diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease and many forms of cancer.  These are costly, life threatening and mostly preventable diseases.

If your pet is overweight we can work with you on ways to get his weight under control.  We can help you to calculate your pet’s daily caloric intake and help you to form an exercise plan.  We can help to determine the need for prescription diets or medications and help you to monitor the safe weight loss of your pet.  Getting that extra weight off your pet now can add both quantity and quality to the life of your pet.

Moe(black/white,) Larry(white/black tabby,) and Curly(orange/white,) born around March 1st, were rescued from under a trailer at a car dealership. These delightful little "wild things" will "make your heart sing." They are active, happy, smart, mischievous, and very affectionate. They are good with children, scratching post trained, house trained, and used to having their nails trimmed. Give these little rogues a chance, and they will worm their way into your heart. Moe, Larry, Curly are neutered and up-to-date with routine shots.  Please contact AARF at (336)768-PETS or email for more information.

Rabies Bite Awareness

Rabies bites kill at least 50,000 people worldwide each year, mostly children.  Dogs are the main culprits.  In the U.S., where pet vaccinations and stray dog control problems are strong, rabies has a different face: Raccoons and skunks are by far the top hosts.

Scientists are taking a stand against these rabid animals.  Since the early 1990s more than one hundred million doses of oral vaccine have been spread in problem areas to create buffer zones.  Distribution continues today.  At the same time a new host is showing its teeth. Bats are widespread and mobile and are directly implicated in 20 of the 25 U.S. deaths since 1997, as bat bites can go unnoticed, especially if the victim is asleep when bitten.  Scientists are working on ways to combat these airborne hosts.  Ideas range from genetically modified insect prey to a parasite for drug delivery, says rabies expert Charles Rupprecht of the Centers  for Disease Control and Prevention.  Meanwhile, up to 40,000 U.S. bite victims yearly rely on a six-shot regimen in case of infection.  Doctors who administer the drugs quickly haven’t lost a patient yet.  On the other hand, no person with confirmed rabies has ever survived without the preventative treatment.

If you or someone you know has been bitten by an animal it is important that you receive medical attention immediately.  Many people don’t realize that waiting until you show symptoms of rabies to get the shots can prove fatal.   Bat bites and scratches are often not noticeable. Bat teeth are tiny and razor sharp. They leave a mark the size of a pin prick, which can be easily overlooked. Scratches are shallow and usually only a millimeter long. Because it can be difficult to find a scratch or bite mark, any physical contact can be considered an exposure.
